The SBA is looking to increase lender participation by expanding access to capital in the next year, according to an article in Coleman Report. The agency will add new and returning lenders to its programs and increase small business participation in government contracting.
In a campaign speech, Democratic presidential nominee Hilary Clinton addressed problems with the tax code for small businesses. She said that U.S tax rules were biased towards big corporations and was time consuming and costly for small businesses. “I want my campaign to figure out how we’re going to jump-start small businesses,” Clinton said. “How do we level that playing field?” Clinton cited a recent World Bank survey ranking the United States 46th in the world in the ease in which small businesses can be started.
A craft beer brewery was named the 2015 Small Business of the Year for Northern California by the San Francisco Office of the SBA. Founded in 1995, the small business expanded from just a few of the Norgrove family members working at the brewery to over 150 employees today. The business expanded once with a SBA 7a loan and then again utilizing a SBA 504 CDC loan, working with the Bay Area Development Company. The SBA will honor the company at a private ceremony in May.
InnovateHER, a women’s business challenge being run by the SBA, seeks to “unearth innovative products and services that help impact and empower the lives of women and families.” SBA Administrator Maria Contreras-Sweet and the SBA’s Office of Women’s Business Ownership announced its 15 finalists for the awards. The finalists will make a live pitch to a panel of expert judges in May during National Small Business Week in Washington, D.C. Three top awards and $30,000 in prize money are up for grabs. According to the SBA website, InnovateHER provides an opportunity for entrepreneurs to showcase products or services that have a measurable impact on the lives of women and families, have the potential for commercialization, and fill a need in the marketplace.
The New Hampshire office of the SBA and the New Hampshire Bankers Association (NHBA) announced that Scott Johnson, president and founder of Certified Retail Solutions in Dover, has been named New Hampshire’s Small Business Person of the Year. He will be honored at an awards event in May. Johnson will go on to compete with the nation’s top small businesses for the honor of National Small Business Person of the Year during the SBA’s National Small Business Week celebration.
